ICM Final

My mom asked me to make a gift on her birthday. I never got around to getting her an actually meaningful gift. For my ICM final I wanted to have the project be composed of a series of sketches. As an individual with limited coding process, I needed to form a group in order to accomplish this vision in less than two weeks. I gathered a group of 6 people and we decided upon creating sketches that reflected on our own childhoods.

I decided to create a music box that plays my mother singing "you are my sunshine". This was the initial concept and at that time I had no idea how I wanted to represent the idea visually. I finally landed upon creating a self portrait with a familiar environment as a background.

In my sketch there were several different pieces of code I felt proud to have successfully pulled off. Through making this project I found out several ways of creatively using images. Starting from the back and moving to the front. The sky full of stars was a single png rotated at a regular speed. The glowing sun in the center of the figure was 6 pngs on a loop using frameCount and diameter mapped to the accelerating of the crank. The fireflies were circles mapped over Perlin noise it its movement on the x and y axis but also its diameter, so that it naturally appears and disappears. To cap off the entire image was the use of a single png sandwiched in the middle, where only the boy is transparent so that it would pick up the lighting emanating behind him.

I'm satisfied with the project overall. Every aspect of the coding was achieved as I envisioned, the only part I wish I could have done better is the painting of the landscape, which I can do on my own time.

Thanks Ellen.
