This Week's ICM reflection

Writer: Kevin LeeKevin Lee

1. what do you feel confident about?

I've always felt confident about my concepts. I feel confident when I'm making simple interactions or the individual parts of a greater interaction.

2. what would you like to practice more?

I think I just need to create more projects of my own. The excercises are great for rehashing my memory, but I don't feel like I'll truly get it until it arises in my own creative projects. Recently I have been laying in my bed and trying to come up with creative problems and writing out all the code onto paper, or imagine all the lines of code in my head. I get anxious when I can't recall the arguments or I don't know the logic clicks without typing it in on the editor. It makes me feel like the information hasn't been ingrained in my mind.

3. Is there anything else you would like to learn?

I really want to look into creating interactive experiences that feel natural, and organic. I think the nature of code will be a good fit for me, but at this point I don't see it in the course selection.

Nice work on the exercises this week, and I couldn’t agree more about developing your own projects to reinforce understanding and learn new concepts and techniques. And Wow! you’re working through code in your head? That’s impressive.

I also agree that Nature of Code would be an excellent follow-up for you to ICM, but unfortunately, Shiffman is on sabbatical in the spring. Fingers crossed, the class is back next year. In the meantime, most of the videos (recently redone) are online, and there’s also an accompanying book if you prefer to read (link at the top of the page). In the past, I’ve heard of students forming their own NoC study groups to create structure and accountability for learning the…
